The First Spark

Have you felt it? That small burn low in your chest — the one that wakes the closer you get to the thing you've been moving toward, maybe without ever having a name for it. It's been there long enough to be familiar, and deep enough that you've always known it was yours. Some call it purpose. Others call it calling. Either way, it runs steady. It knows your name.

This tier is named for kindling: the quiet gather done before the spark is ever struck. Dry twigs, bark, the work nobody photographs but everyone depends on. Without it, the brightest spark dies. With it, a fire takes. Not because anyone teaches how to burn — but because the wood is already arranged, waiting for the flame each person carries.

When fires meet, they don't compete. They rise together. Each one brightens the others, shadows recede, the whole circle grows warmer. Some flames flicker; another nearby leans in until the light steadies again. That's the hearth — not a single torch, but many held near enough that no one burns alone.

Kindling is the beginning, before the unknown has a shape. If you're standing here — curious, drawn closer, sensing something gathering you toward something larger — this pile was gathered with you in mind. You bring your fire. We bring ours. Together, they become a circle no wind can break.

What burns here

Whatever strikes true gets shared here first. Before the excerpts travel, before anything is shaped for the feed — this is where the light lands first. Announcements of what's arriving. Traces of what's taking shape in the inner circles. Fragments of what I'm learning, offered in case they meet something already stirring in you. Nothing here is urgent. Everything here is honest. Over time, it gathers into an archive — a record of what mattered, kept in one tended place.

Stories of elders, of children, of places that need someone paying attention — told the way truth usually arrives, not as a lecture but as a question you can't unask. Resources for showing up when elections turn, because democracy is also something we tend. Readiness for storms forming on the horizon, because preparation is a form of love. There are things quietly changing under the surface — food, laws, systems that run profit when they should run care. You've noticed. This is where those observations land.

Friends of this community and their work get a spotlight here. Eventually, so might yours.

How it works

Reading is free and open to everyone, wherever in the world you're standing. New posts arrive straight to your inbox — the fire comes to you. If you'd like to sit closer, commenting belongs to the paid tiers; Kindling is the outer glow of the hearth, and the circle is waiting when you're ready to cross it.

Join as a free member and receive the Wheel of Life — the same self-assessment I use with coaching clients, yours to fill out honestly. Six areas of life, one honest look at where your fuel is going and where it's running thin. Most people are surprised by what the wheel shows them.

Fire cleanses. Fire levels a thing down to what's actually true underneath. A wildfire and a hearth are made of the same element — the only difference is whether anyone's tending it.

Consider this tended.

Come sit by the fire. Bring your spark.
